BUCKEYE CHAPTER 111
Senator Brown Calls For Support For Ohio Vets
January 25, 2008

Washington, DC – In advance of the president’s State of the Union address, U.S. Senator Brown (D-OH) today encouraged the president to invest in Ohio’s veterans. With the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) handling record numbers of disability, pension, and benefit claims, Brown challenged the Bush administration to provide ample resources so that all veterans receive the full scope of benefits they have earned. Nearly 5,000 of Ohio’s 1 million veterans are waiting up to six-months on disability claims and Ohio’s average compensation of $7,039 is well below the national average.

“We are shortchanging our veterans with less benefits and long waits,” said Brown. “That’s an unconscionable way to treat Americans who have sacrificed so much for all of us.”

Buffalo Soldiers Leave a Lasting Legacy For All
The name Buffalo Soldiers was given to the troopers of the 9th and 10th Cavalry regiments by their adversaries in the Indian wars following the Civil War.

The Indians respected the black soldiers for their courage and fearlessness, qualities they found in the buffalo. They also thought the soldiers' hair resembled the tuft between the horns of the bison.

In any case, the soldiers wore the nickname with pride.

At least 14 Buffalo Soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor in the years from 1870 and 1890. read more at www.buffalosoldiers.com
The name eventually also came to be associated with the all-black 24th and 25th Infantry regiments, which often fought beside the cavalry outfits. Several local soldiers made names for themselves like 1SG Robert Pinn a Civil War veteran and namesake of the Pinn National Guard armory in Stow and the Reverand Lefress McMillan of Akron who fought in the African-Middle Eastern campaign in World War II.
